You win some you dim sum - house of joy is the perfect place if you want the true experience of a chaotic, delicious meal that will leave you bursting at the seams. Line moves quickly on a weekend - only waited about 15 mins at peak dim sum time on a Saturday. Everything was pretty good. Some of the steamed dishes were a bit large (like the har gow) but all the steamed dishes were nice and hot. The fried dishes were all a bit cold which was less than ideal. Overall good meal!
This place is definitely an experience. It is loud and boisterous and you will share a table with others so be forewarned. They push loads of food in bite sized pieces around and you just point and they bring it to you. Items are tallied on a sheet you keep with you. You will not be given a menu (it is available online). But even though we had no idea what we were doing we didn't do poorly. We got several plates of food and only ended up spending around $40 including tip. Food was delicious too. Memories were made and we would come back.
Ok solid and fast. Nice indoor dim sum place. I was testing it out so only went for a morning to-go order of har gow (Crystal shrimp dumpling; sometimes GF but sometimes wheat in it for chew factor). An order was $5.25. As expected ambiance with pink tablebooth, a male host and lots of circle bamboo baskets holding small eats. The cashier spoke english and chinese and fast service.
My family and I went the weekend before the actual Moon Festival holiday around 10:30 AM. Around this time, the place is moderately filled and we got a table for 4 immediately. Around 11:30 was probably when much more people came and had to wait for their number to be called for a table. When we were seated, we were asked for what tea we'd like for the table and given a slip for the serving staff to stamp on for each of our orders. Not long after that, a steady stream of carts passed by. For the turnip cake dish that my family wanted, one of the cart ladies was nice enough to get it from another cart for us. When no one was around to do this, my mom simply took the order slip and went up to a cart to get the dish (This is accepted behavior in most dim sum places I've been to growing up as a Chinese American). The level of noise was from chatter mostly. My family and I were still able to have our own conversation without having the holler or lean over the table. Lastly, one of the reasons why my family comes to this place again is the variety of foods and the taste. My favorite so far is the Red Rice Roll. It looks like one of those steamed rice rolls, but with a red-ish exterior (Sorry I was too busy eating to take a photo).
We came to eat some dim sum today Saturday August 31st before heading over to Broadway to catch a play. Man this place was packed. About a 20-30 minute wait. It's honestly impressive how they run the show here. Let's start with this, if you have a party of 4 or less, you're not getting your own table. All of the tables in here are probably 10 seaters, and they combine separate parties at the same table. Totally fine with the wife & myself, but I'm giving you yelpers a true heads up on this. It's for sure how they keep the wait from being worse, good for us patrons, great for their business. They have carts walking around throughout with items on them. You just ask for what you want, and they drop it at your table and mark your slip. Cart items to me could've been hotter. If you want menu items you do have to flag down a waiter/waitress. Overall good experience and would recommend trying this place out to satisfy your Dim Sum craving.
Absolutely delicious! Cannot recommend House of Joy enough. Service is so quick and efficient. Brought a large group here for dinner and was able to call the day of and they scheduled us in immediately. They already had a menu available for us to order from and the portions were huge! It was a great experience overall and I can highly recommend this place for both big groups as well as a small dinner. The atmosphere is great and you can't beat it for the price and location!
Decent dinner spot right in the heart of Chinatown! This spot is always packed because of how spacious it is, with solid food selections. Came for a big family dinner and we were put in one of their sound-proof VIP rooms in the basement. We ordered a plethora of classic Chinese dinner dishes (not all pictured), from chicken to bok choy, as well as some classic starters, like Shirmp with a dipping sauce and their appetizer platter that features selections of sliced meats and cold salads. While this place is known for their all-day dim sum, it's a decent typical dinner spot as well. Also portrayed to be relatively clean and comfortable, and the servers are attentive. No complaints.
Really solid dim sum for breakfast on a Saturday. I came in by myself telling them I was fine sharing a table if the others didn't mind, and I got sat within 5 minutes at a table of 3 at a table that probably fit ~6-8 (plenty of space). Place was super packed for 9:50am on a Saturday morning, which is great for the freshness of the food. The star dish was probably the chicken feet, perfectly cooked, easy to put in your mouth and suck all the delicious flavored meat/skin off the bone. I also got the shrimp dumplings and pork&shrimp shumai -- both were very solid though nothing above standard. Tables were utilitarian: clean, spaced reasonably close but not claustrophobically so, and simple coverings. Hot tea plus standard paper napkins and chopsticks when you sit down. Solid dim sum place.
I gave my wife a surprise birthday dinner celebrating her 50th birthday in San Francisco. Her best friend since high school threw her a 2nd surprise party when we came to New York at the House of Joy. So we were really surprised. If you are craving crab this is where you go. You need to see these pictures. The giant crab was so delicious. Three dishes were made from it: 1. crab leg pieces sliced open like on a half shell 2. crab knuckles fried with a 1000 years old egg crust 3. huge portions of fried rice made with the caviar We were in a private dining room downstairs with a karaoke system. Yeah karaoke, it was there, had to do it. The service was excellent. The other dishes were good, but they were well overshadowed by the giant crab. BTW bring at least 8 people with you if you are going to order this giant crab or you're going to have a lot of doggy bags.
